Environment
Holton Lee covers an area of 350 acres (140ha) and contains habitats which include heathland, saltmarsh, reedbed and woodland. The majority of the site is recognised and protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Holton Lee strives to provide access for all to the environment with accessible pathways that interconnect the varying habitats, interpretation panels, resting places and waymarkers, as well as maintaining and conserving the natural interest of the SSSI.
Volunteers are always welcome to help us manage and maintain the site so if you are interested in practical conservation work then please contact environment@holtonlee.co.uk.
Enjoy easier access to the wild in Dorset!
Holton Lee is one of the latest sites to become involved in the ‘Countryside Mobility’ scheme which is working to make the South West a truly ‘accessible’ tourism destination by improving access to the countryside for people with limited mobility.
A variety of off-road mobility vehicles can be hired from Holton Lee which include 5 Trampers (one with joystick control), golf buggies and the Ambug (which will accommodate up to 6 people, including wheelchair users).
Located around the site are seats, marker posts and maps to guide you. Access is also available to horticultural areas, bird hides, viewing points and geocaches which are located throughout the Estate. Guided tours and classes are also available e.g. photography, wild flower ID, bird watching, landscape painting etc. Leaflets showing features of interest and the various graded routes are available from the Farmhouse. We are grateful for funding from the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, via Natural England, that has enabled further access improvements to be made in 2013.
Full details about the sites you can visit, and how to become a member of Countryside Mobility see www.countrysidemobility.org or phone Holton Lee on 01202 625562.
Mobility Safari
Are you a wheelchair user or do you have mobility difficulties
Would you like to get out into the countryside more, especially to places that are not usually accessible?
If so, as well as offering Tramper hire, Holton Lee can offer mobility safaris around our 350 acre wildlife rich grounds.
We have recently acquired an electric stretched golf buggy that can accommodate two wheelchairs (at a push) and five non – wheelchair users. The buggy can be used in all weathers following the extensive network of wheelchair paths. The purchase of the buggy was made possible through a grant from The Worshipful Company of Clothmakers. We can offer you guided tours around the grounds taking in the wildlife and landscape, and the historical and archaeological interest in the area.
As well as general interest tours, staff can offer outdoor classes and field trips with opportunities to learn about digital photography, habitat management, plant ID, ornithology, creative writing, landscape painting etc.
