Improvisations in Blue by Trish Wheatley
Improvisations in Blue Artist Statement For me, as a musician, music is something that has become part of who I am. The development of my appreciation for it has grown with me since early childhood to the present day and will continue to change and develop as I grow older. The music I play and listen to expresses who I am in a way that I find words cannot. Since I discovered photography as an art-making medium I have felt compelled to photograph this part of my life. I think that this is because I need to make sense of why it means so much to me and I find that photography might go some way to explain that more clearly. I also want people to see the beauty in music that I see. Early works included photocopies and scans of significant sheet music from my childhood piano lessons, the work evolved from there to trying to represent music in a visual way through photography and then to the light trail based photography I exhibit today. The piano has always been my instrument of choice but has somehow been the most challenging to tackle photographically. Perhaps this is because I am so familiar with it and as an object any sort of exploration of the form would be false. In this most recent series of images I have explored the act of practicing a piece to perfection and the physicality of playing the piano in a way that I do not normally see when doing the activity. This therefore is a more valid exploration of the piano, my relationship with it and the music that I play. The photographs in the foyer, were the first series in which I developed the light trail technique and where the title of the exhibition originates. They are an exploration of the shape and design of musical instruments and their relationship to the female form. The work then developed into the series of images exhibited in the main gallery.
