Space Between
Space Between Press Release
Soundbite“I look totally different outside to how I feel inside” PRESS STORYHolton Lee is third in a series of four venues to host this exhibition with a difference. ‘Space Between’ will showcase 53 pieces of artwork from 19 different artists in an exhibition that promotes equality of access by exhibiting amateur, professional, non-disabled and disabled artists without distinction. The exhibition represents a coming of age as the successor to the new millennium exhibition ‘On The Level’ in 2001 by choosing to exhibit a wide spectrum of artists work to recognise and celebrate the work of all artists as equals. For the last two decades, it has been widely acknowledged, that disabled artist’s work forms a unique and valuable contribution to the visual arts canon. Despite this, disabling barriers continue to exclude and deny many talented artists and potential artists the opportunities they deserve. On The Next Level understands these key contradictions and they form the starting point of the exhibition. The theme of “Space Between” is wide ranging and exploratory in its interpretation and challenges stereotypical thinking and encourages debate and discourse both within and without the disability arts framework. “Space Between” was formulated and driven by the action research projects, in which four disabled artists were commissioned to work with local participation groups in Holton Lee, Salisbury, Slimbridge and Taunton by James Aldridge, Michael O’Hara, James Lake and Teresa Whiting. As Zoe Partington-Sollinger explains…. “Spaces have been the subject of many artists and in this exploratory show we draw together a mixture of commonality of experience but also ‘space’ for an artist’s particular practise. ‘Space Between’ is a valuable combination of viewpoints, creativity, experimentation and expression.” The exhibition is open 9-5 everyday and will run until 3rd November before moving on to the final show at Salisbury Galleries – John Creasy Museum in early 2007.
