Imperfection by Janet Smith
PRESS RELEASE Graduate Goes Solo Janet Smith, a recent BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate from The Arts Institute at Bournemouth, will be exhibiting works including drawings combined with photography from 7th – 24th August in the Gallery at Faith House, Holton Lee, Poole. Janet’s first solo show explores issues around damage and imperfection using the body and mouth as a metaphor to life experience. Photographs from a site specific installation in a derelict attic, challenge the viewer’s perceptions of current views on the obsession with physical appearance and the contrast between youth and the ageing body. Uncompromising stark depictions of broken and missing teeth and the ageing body, aim to confront the viewer with a vision of decay and mortality, whilst the expressive quality of the mark-making is designed to evoke an emotional response. Janet explains her work in more detail “By exploring issues of scale and space I seek to encourage a more ambivalent and complex reading of the images. The challenge for me is to expose a reality at odds with our own.” This fantastic thought provoking exhibition will be on display and open to all from 7th – 24th August in the Gallery at Faith House, Holton Lee, Poole. Please call in advance to avoid disappointment as Faith House is occasionally used for private bookings.
