ONLY SMARTIES HAVE THE ANSWER
A new exhibition by Aidan Shingler

Award-winning artist Aidan Shingler brings his latest exhibition
“Only Smarties have the Answer” to Faith House at Holton
Lee, Dorset from 25th January- 5th March 2004.  The Private
View is on 24th January from 12.30-14.30

Supported by Arts Council South West and Dorset County Council, this is the first time this exhibition has toured outside London. Through poignant and often humorous metaphors, Shingler satirises and parodies the mentality of the shrink. Everyday objects are integrated into art forms to illustrate his thoughts and beliefs and much of the humour of the work comes across in visual puns

Aidan, who has experienced schizophrenia since he was 19 reveals in his work the immense creative opportunities it has given him.  He does not see schizophrenia as a mental illness but rather a ‘cosmic disturbance’ during which he experiences heightened awareness.  His work is positive and has an uplifting quality which can be appreciated on many levels.

“.. My first and subsequent episodes were very visually imbued with symbolism…as a result I decided to study art in an endeavour to communicate my experiences using the language and vocabulary of visual media”

Bow ties made of surgical dressing represent the clinician, origami butterflies are made from the artists psychiatric records, and a flashing  blue neon light strikes the root of a scorched tree representing an electrical current passing through the
brains driftwood.   “…This image is indicative of the power and energy that is felt during an episode of schizophrenia.  It conveys the way in which it can strike out of the blue..”

The exhibition is open daily from 9am – 5pm.  The gallery is occasionally used for other purposes so visitors are advised to check opening times before visiting.  01202 625562.
