PRESS RELEASE

“ALCHEMY” by Alyson Lomas

Alchemy is showing at Faith House, Holton Lee, Dorset from 17th June – 28th July 2006. The private view is on Friday 16th June from 4.30 – 7pm.

“I make work that records my experiences of being an artist with a disability. The issues of the loss of mobility and severe fatigue have changed my approach to my work. The focus of attention, now, is on finding ways of conveying, through painting, feelings of both movement and stillness. My work is dictated by the nature of the paint, it’s propensity to spread, stain, settle in pools, drip and splatter, and run in unpredictable ways when poured. The process of painting intervenes and the significance of these sources creates it’s own momentum.

The light releases the energy of the flowing paint. The dark contains the energy enclosed in some of the paintings. These paintings represent a journey of discovery – a celebration of a new kind of freedom. It is not my intention to, necessarily, produce recognisable subjects – however, if the viewer sees glimpses of a subject that resonates with them within the painting then that broadens the effect of the work.

I am simply recording impulses and feelings while creating ways in which the complexities of the paint flowing across a surface create their own rhythms, tensions and movement.

Alchemy is the “pursuit of the transmutation of base metals into precious metal. Thus the exhibition title, ‘Alchemy’, represents my journey from the difficult and sometimes dark experiences of disability to a valuable new direction of both subject and technique.”
